W H I T E W I N D x - warrior - x Whitewind woke curled up in her den near the center of the warriors den, the warmth of the cats surrounding her nest letting out calm even breaths deep in a sound sleep. The unusually coloured she-cat lifted her head with her eyes fixed on the entrance before she pulled herself up, jumping three quick steps around the sleeping warriors before exiting the den with calm strides before strolling over to the fresh kill pile, picking up a silver fish before dragging it over to a clear space where she placed the scaled animal on the ground lying her body behind it with the fish clutched between her paws. The sun was hot with warm winds blowing every now and then, the camp clearing was warm with exposure from the weather. She leaned down with a gentle bite pulling away the soft meat with her ears angled behind her, waiting for the familiar rustle of warriors waking and apprentices running around the camp with a similar energy to the kits playing outside the nursery.
Her eyes glanced toward the apprentices den as she chewed the fish quietly, her mind wandering to her apprentice. Snakepaw, a unfortunate cat cursed with issues with his mental health making a large majority of the camp dislike him and how his personality changes within moments. She had agreed to be his mentor believing she could help the cat in ways others couldn't with her gentle but firm way of teaching, and yet, he was the most difficult apprentice she had had up to date though he had the makings of a fine warrior. She curled her tail around her hind paw as she bit into the soft creature again, close to finishing her meal. The she cat got up after finishing her meal, making a calm approach to the smaller den, poking her head through the entrance searching for Snakepaw. "Snakepaw, time for training." she mewed her soft voice as she lay her blue eyes on the sleeping shape.

Snakepaw's sleep was greatly disturbed as per usual with a nightmare of a similar sort that only he saw almost every night. His ears and toes twitched fretfully in his sleep, and occasionally he let out a tiny whimper. Snakepaw was in a place that was achingly familiar. There was darkness in all directions, and the walls and floors of the giant cave he was in were formless. The ground under his feet was wet and soggy, as if he were in Riverclan, but his surroundings were completely unreal. It was like the night sky had folded down all around him, but there was no Silverpelt, only inky blue darkness. When he looked down at his paws or over his shoulder, he couldn't see himself. It was like he was invisible, or like he wasn't even physically there. He only had his eyes here in this dark place, though he felt the stiffness of the chilled air and the wetness underneath his feet. He couldn't move anywhere or feel himself able to even lift his invisible paws. It was always like this...and then... What felt like huge, cruel claws the size of eagle talons gripped and clutched tightly and painfully at his shoulders. Fear shot through him, for he knew that was grabbing him. He couldn't see it yet, but he knew it was there. He wanted to part his jaws in a scream of terror, but he couldn't feel his own mouth's existence on his face, and he could only imagine himself screaming in his mind. IT'S GOING TO HURT ME! IT'S GOING TO KILL ME! I HAVE TO GET AWAY! I CAN'T GET AWAY! IT'S GOING TO KILL ME! NO, STOP! SOMEBODY HELP... Snakepaw's thoughts yowled as he had no physical mouth to wail his pleas aloud. But only it could hear his cries, and it was more than willing to speak in return. No one is going to help you. You are going to die, then I'll be free to destroy everything. Snakepaw couldn't even close his eyes when he saw the face of the one whose claws were crushing him whole: a huge, dark shadowy shape that slowly came into visibility. Its glowing orange eyes seemed to raze right through Snakepaw's existence, mocking him. The shadowed monster who tortured his soul every night was the one being Snakepaw hated more than anyone else in the world: himself. Snakepaw's soul was screaming to run away and to escape with all of his might. He felt like the flight instinct within him was about to explode within him. His fear was the only thing he could feel. He wanted this all to be over, but he couldn't do anything at all. He even doubted he would survive this fight with the other half of his soul.
inspired by a nightmare I used to have a lot when I was younger ^^; hint: if he gets woken up soon, his evil personality won't take over his conscious~ 83 || 514 words || Whitewind tagged

W H I T E W I N D Blue eyes caught sight of a shifting shape in the dark, twitching in sleep due to a dream. Her eyes narrowed realising it was Snakepaw, she had had this cat long enough as her apprentice to be worried about what state he would wake up in, pouncing past all the apprentices to land neatly beside the moving nest she raised a paw the padded him roughly with her small paw. "Snakepaw, get up." she hissed loudly, "You're having a bad dream, get up." her tone became worried as she continued to shake the apprentice hoping he would stir from the movement. She had recalled the cat waking up in a vile mood, his mind taken over by something that didn't represent what that cat truly was - almost as though he was a completely different Snakepaw living in his body. It both concerned and scared Whitewind and was unsure on what to do to help the troubled tom, the senior warrior had never seen anything like Snakepaw in all her moons and had no clue if the medicine cats could do anything to help the mentally troubled cat. Both Russetfur and Foxpaw's skills only extended as far as their herbs could which seemed to only have the ability to mend cats with physical issues, which the exceptions of herbs that could calm down cats though Whitewind wasn't a medicine cat herself, maybe she should ask Russetfur if there was anything that could be done.
Her eyes flickered toward the den entrance, apprentices lay soundly not to far from it and she hoped Snakepaw would wake silently so that it wouldn't disturb the other apprentices making them more aware of his problems unintentionally. She nudged him again returning her cautious gaze toward him, "Wake up Snakepaw." she leaned down speaking loudly near his ear.

"And who is to say we won't burn it out?" And who is to say we won't sink in doubt? "Who is to say we won't fade to gray?" Who are they anyway? Anyway they don't know.
Snakepaw could only wail in his heart without a voice like a kit that had just lost its mother and was being hunted down by a fox. As the cruel part of his soul began to squeeze the life out of him with its sharp claws until he felt like he would be torn into bloody shreds, his silent wails rose to screams ever voiceless still. Suddenly another paw not belonging to his torturer poked him roughly, and all around him, Snakepaw saw his surroundings backing away, as if he were drifting away from them, though he could feel the fierce and painful tugging of that arena of his nightmare sucking at his fur like a vacuum, and his other half desperately clawing at him in order to try and pull back his victim.
Snakepaw could do nothing as the battle of wills waged in his nightmare, and he prayed with all his heart that the influence of the intervener would win. He didn't know the identity of the one who had interrupted his torture session, but even if it were something as dangerous as a fox attacking him as he slept, he would gladly be slaughtered by a fox-face than have his soul be handed to the mercy of his evil half. "Snakepaw, get up. You're having a bad dream, get up." A vaguely familiar voice hissed loudly in his ears, echoing through the world in his head and seeming to blow a wind through his dream, pushing his enemy away from him as the gap between them widened. Snakepaw anxiously watched the dark shadowy cat snarling in frustration as it reached for him with outstretched talons, and he was backing away slowly.
He felt like he was being shaken out of his paralysis by the one whose presence seemed like it was behind him, dragging him away from his nightmare. "Wake up, Snakepaw." The voice meowed loudly in his ears again. He began to faintly recognize the voice, one belonging to a memory he had well documented in his memory of consciousness. Snakepaw turned and began to frantically claw his way through something like a half-lit tunnel towards the direction of the voice and the light at the end. Snakepaw suddenly found himself in his nest, or what was left of it. His mouth was wide open, and drool soaked his cheek fur. His tail was fluffed up as far as his short gray fur could possibly expand.
Snakepaw blinked his wide orange eyes, round with fear, and looked up at Whitewind, his mentor. The pale warrior with a dark brown face and blue eyes wore a look of concern. Snakepaw saw that he had made a mess of himself in his fight to wake up and return to the world of consciousness in one piece, as his nest was clawed apart. "Whitewind...?" He mewed a greeting hesitantly, his voice going up at the end as if he were inquiring why she was at his side when he woke. He suddenly wondered if maybe he was in trouble; maybe he had done something bad just now, and he wasn't even aware of it. Snakepaw shakily dipped his head and began to murmur, "I'm sorry...I'm sorry, I'm sorry I'm sorry." The more he said it, the more he began to dread that he had done something absolutely horrific.

The siamese watched with a now calm expression as the tom began to wake after her prodding. She knew already he would be stressed out, the tom had been in the clan long enough for knowledge to spread about his condition, the only thing she didn't know how to do for this tom was help his mental health. Her brow furrowed slightly as she went into her thoughts only to be pulled away by her name being spoken by the now very away tom as he began to repeat an apology. The small she cat let out of soft purr of understanding toward Snakepaw as she leaned down to touch her nose to his ear in an attempt to comfort him as her tail swung around to tap his shoulder lightly as she stood up, not yet speaking glancing around the den to see if any of the other cats had woken from the noise they had created - but the others remained sound asleep, just what she would expect from a den full of apprentices. Turning her kind blue gaze to the frantic tom, "You did nothing to be sorry for, Snakepaw." she purred softly. Whitewind spoke in a low tone that held nothing but pure kindness and optimism, her articulation was perfect as she spoke, she was often kinder than she was mean as she believed nothing would come from getting angry at her apprentice for something he couldn't even control himself. "Now come, we will have no more worry today." she mewed getting up quickly and gestured him to follow her with a flick her stumpy tail before turning her head over her shoulder to look back at him, "If you were ever going to do anything wrong, you can expect me to always be there to stop you. Don't worry Snakepaw, I'm always around to help." she mewed softly so that only he could hear her kind words. "Get some breakfast, I'll wait for you in the clearing." she purred softly before moving into the clearing silently before sitting down, pulling her tail around her paws neatly as she sat in wait.

"And who is to say we won't burn it out?" And who is to say we won't sink in doubt? "Who is to say we won't fade to gray?" Who are they anyway? Anyway they don't know.
"You did nothing to be sorry for, Snakepaw." A kind purr sounded in his ears that felt like a soft bed of downy feathers against his wounded soul.
Snakepaw had been shuddering with guilt, but feeling saved by his mentor's warmth, he found himself able to calm his fears. He was safe now, safe in Riverclan surrounded by his clanmates, even if they didn't all appreciate him for the things his darker half had been notorious before on other occasions. Snakepaw's trembling faded slowly, and he was able to raise his chin hesitantly to gaze up at his mentor. Her eyes were a completely opposite hue, kind and deep blue, and his own were wild and orange, like a malicious fire raging about, wishing only to destroy and bring death to all living things. And yet his snake eyes, though a fitting look for when he really was in that state of malevolence, did not represent his true feelings when he was himself. Snakepaw dipped his head briefly and mewed in a soft voice, "Th-thank you, Whitewind."
"Now come, we will have no more worry today." Whitewind mewed next, and Snakepaw's limbs, though still weak and shaken up, scrambled to stand to his paws and move to follow his mentor. He briefly tried to neatly scrape back together some of the clumps of moss that he had scattered from his nest, and trying to keep his breathing steady, rasped his tongue over his ruffled fur on his chest and shoulders as he began to pad after his mentor. Whitewind was mewing very softly, "If you were ever going to do anything wrong, you can expect me to always be there to stop you. Don't worry Snakepaw, I'm always around to help. Get some breakfast, I'll wait for you in the clearing." Snakepaw nodded, his face glowing with gratitude.
While he saw Whitewind going to sit down in the clearing, a purr rose in his chest; he couldn't explain his overwhelming sense of relief and how touched he was by his kind mentor's words. He couldn't stop himself however from feeling guilty that only he was the problem cat in the clan, and Whitewind had to take extra care of him, especially when he wasn't himself. Whitewind went out of her way as a mentor to help him emotionally, and without her support, Snakepaw felt that he would be completely alone and isolated in the clan that he loved so much. Snakepaw's short legs carried him towards the fresh-kill pile with the haste of not wanting to keep his mentor waiting for long.
But as he arrived, he felt like his stomach was still asleep. Snakepaw didn't have any appetite at all this morning, especially with last night's "nightmare" still fresh in his mind and in his nerves. Still, he couldn't let himself be a concern to others any more than he already was, and he thought his mentor would scold him if he chose to not eat, so Snakepaw took a tiny fish from the pile and began to reluctantly nibble its strong flesh. When Snakepaw finished his small meal, he hastily arrived at Whitewind's side in the Riverclan camp's clearing at the center. "I'm sorry I took so long." He quickly apologized, dipping his head. "I'm ready to go."

Whitewind sat with her short tail almost drawn fully around her forepaws with a level gaze as she watched the soft movement of trees being brushed by the breeze, eyes occasionally following her apprentice as he went for his meal. He was unlike any other apprentice Whitewind had the honor of mentoring and a small part of her wondered why Swanstar had seen her as a suitable cat for this unusual case within the smaller tom. Having never had kits but adoring them completely maybe the leader believed her to have the kind mother instinct for all cats which made her mothering techniques as a mentor perfect for the cat who needed a little bit more attention that other apprentices'. Other their short period of being mentor and apprentice, Whitewind had truly grown fond of Snakepaw unlike most of the clan, Whitewind found it easy to find the cat he really was beneath his illnesses; and that cat was absolutely worth her time and respect. She was definitely proud to be his mentor no matter how other cats saw him.
The siamese cat noticed his small choice in food and narrowed her eyes slightly, she never expected him to pick a decent meal after the nightmare he had just experienced but concern boiled at the back of her mind on whether he was maintaining a good weight for a young cat, being underweight would not bode well for when the colder weather hits and prey is not as easy to obtain. His words broke her from her thoughts, "I'm sorry I took so long.". Whitewind let out a purr of amusement and touched her nose to his ear in a friendly gesture, "You must stop apologising to me, you know I don't mind waiting." she stood up stretching her body backwards and forwards before adding on, "I must say I quite enjoy waiting. Gives me time to do nothing, which I have so much joy doing!" she purred before flicking her tail in a gesture to follow her. Whitewind was determind to teach Snakepaw how to catch a fish correctly for the rivers that flowed through their territory giving them perfect reflections of their beautiful territory. She pushed through the reeds that sheltered the den her body moving effortlessly through the territory at a relatively slow pace that wasn't slow enough to be boring and not fast enough to be stressful; it was calming with the comforting scent of their territory and home unmarked by anything but their own.
She had chosen to take him to the lesser river, it meandered slowly with smoothed rocks littering it's wide base with few large strands of grass wilting over the edge of the bank that sometimes held the deposited dirt from the rivers strength knocking against it's own edges slowly eroding to become larger every year. Water flowed downstream in a way that made Whitewind happy just from the memory of it's beauty, the valleys the sloped high into the sky not yet reaching the soft clouds interlocking at every point. It was place so far from their territory the Riverclan cats never dared to travel there due to not needing to; but Whitewind dreamed of going on a short adventures into the high hills to explore the land beyond their territory that gave them the powerful river filled with fish that get all the cats of Riverclan well fed. "You will be learning how to keep your reflection from the water so you can catch fish with ease, you won't need to jump into the water for this but some of the rocks embedded in the water can be used, I'll show you." she mewed with a smile before walking toward the river bank quietly. The grass was soft and moist beneath her paws as she angled her body backwards slightly removing her reflection from the water though her eyes had a perfect view over the bank with her balance held over three paws with her right forepaw poised to grasp a fish.
The senior warrior watched patiently for a few silent moments with her concentration completely locked onto the river awaiting the arrival of a silver shape moving perfectly through water with ease that Whitewind hoped she would have for herself in her future when she swam. Finally the fish moved swiftly beneath the currents not making it past Whitewind's sharp eye before she split the river with a sharp jab into the water her perfectly pointed claw grasping the fish tightly and tossing it on the bank with practiced ease. "That's the first place you can catch a fish." she looked back at Snakepaw gesturing to the fish that wiggled frantically for a few moments before finally lying still on the grass. Whitewind bunched up her muscles behind her, pouncing onto a rock the lay risen slightly above the river with few large stones surrounding it, perfect for catching passing fish. "If you are hunting in a group you must be able to take on all the river, me personally - I enjoy hunting on the rocks that lie slightly above the river though if you look against the flow of the river you will notice that some rocks the can be stood on for this method lie too close to other rocks of a similar size." she nodded straight ahead of her where rocks lay in clusters with weak rapids pushing through their gaps. "Smaller amounts of fish will be at those rocks and it will be harder to catch them, your better off getting a single large rock to stand on, but you must keep a similar technique."
She crouched perched gracefully on the rock with her claws grasped tightly in the jagged rocks holding tightly so she would slip from the solution that bounced from the river onto the rock. Her tail was held firmly behind her for the perfect balance raising her right paw once more in preparation her other legs held tightly claws inserted into the gaps and jutting outward areas of the rock before a silver fish flowed past her. Her paw sliced through the water once more creating soft ripples before grasping the fish as she did before but this time tossing it upwards gently and grasped it firmly in her jaws to she wouldn't drop it, careful not to puncture it's shiny scales with her pointed teeth. She jumped back to the back quickly, dropping the fish to the floor before turning a kind gaze to Snakepaw. "It's not so hard, but it can take some time to get used to. You must hold your body back slightly so your reflection was be in the water, the fish with see your shadow and avoid you." she sat down as she spoke coiling her tail around her paws neatly as far as it would reach. "First try it on the bank a few times, you might not catch a fish your first few times which is fine, we are mostly working on form, catching prey would just be an added bonus for the clan!" she gestured toward the bank for him to begin trying the technique she just demonstrated. "After you get the form perfect you can try it on the rock in the river. I'm sure you'll get the form well enough today, we have all day to spend here and we can take breaks so that you're not too tired by the end of the training." Whitewind was a mentor who liked her apprentice to know exactly what her plans for training were, and that had not changed from when she was given Snakepaw as an apprentice.

"And who is to say we won't burn it out?" And who is to say we won't sink in doubt? "Who is to say we won't fade to gray?" Who are they anyway? Anyway they don't know.
The gap of time and events of life between when he first woke up and now since eating a small breakfast had begun to calm him down. Snakepaw shyly flicked his hear while his mentor touched her nose to it. "You must stop apologizing to me; you know I don't mind waiting. I must say I quite enjoy waiting. Gives me time to do nothing, which I have so much joy doing!" Whitewind purred, and Snakepaw felt a small purr of amusement growing in his chest. He blinked and then realized that she had just signaled with her tail for him to follow. Given the chance to squirm out of the shell of a terrified, overstressed cat, he could finally begin to feel more like an apprentice again.
If it weren't for all his issues, he could excitedly look forward to a warrior ceremony in the future moons to come after all his apprentice training was completed. He was excited to find out what he would learn today. Snakepaw's fiery orange eyes seemed to spark with blooming energy as his short legs hurried after his mentor's paw steps. But Whitewind wasn't moving at a fast pace, so he didn't need to go far before he was caught up and following at a comfortable pace, even for his shorter legs. Before the reeds could close in on Whitewind's path, Snakepaw slithered forward into her shadow.
He hopped out of the reeds and onto a soft, mossy bank. They were at the lesser river that, together with the greater river, surrounded and protected the Riverclan camp. Snakepaw sniffed the air and took in the soothing scents of life, nature, and Riverclan. Whitewind's words grabbed his attention. "You will be learning how to keep your reflection from the water so you can catch fish with ease; you won't need to jump into the water for this, but some of the rocks embedded into the water can be used. I'll show you." Snakepaw nodded eagerly, his toes kneading the ground in anticipation of beginning the exercise. Snakepaw out of habit almost got up to follow his mentor when he got the hint that she was being quiet, so he held very still and watched from where he was.
Thinking about Whitewind's focus on her reflection as the main subject, he made sure to pay attention to how she adjusted her position so that her reflection did not darken the water. While Whitewind waited patiently, her eyes watching the water carefully with experienced concentration, Snakepaw couldn't pull his eyes away or even blink. Suddenly with lightning fast speed, he saw his mentor's paw practically split the water and hook a fish, flinging it onto the bank before it could even register what was happening to it. "That's the first place you can catch a fish." Whitewind meowed.
Walking on cautious tip toes, Snakepaw crept forward to curiously watch the fish's last struggles out of water before it finally lay still. His stomach protested at the strong, fresh scent that he had not eaten enough this morning, but Snakepaw would not dare make such a move without his mentor's permission. He couldn't quite remember the specific details, but he was well aware that there was a rule in the Warrior Code forbidding him from eating on a hunt. He gave all his attention back to Whitewind as she spoke, "If you are hunting in a group, you must be able to take on all the river. Me personally, I enjoy hunting on the rocks that lie slightly above the river, though if you look against the flow of the river, you will notice some rocks that can be stood on for this method lie too close to other rocks of a similar size." Snakepaw gave a glance in the direction Whitewind was nodding. "Smaller amounts of fish will be at those rocks and it will be harder to catch them, your better off getting a single large rock to stand on, but you must keep a similar technique."
He looked up at Whitewind and mewed, Do...do the fish only live in certain parts of the river?" He had imagined that the fish could just go anywhere, and any place along the river was an optimal hunting spot. But as an experienced hunter, Whitewind obviously knew all the places the fish usually are found, as well as the fact that certain hunting spots are easier to utilize the correct hunting techniques. Snakepaw eagerly watched his mentor do the cool fish hunting thing again. This time, Snakepaw tried to imitate Whitewind's poses from where he stood on the bank. He dug his claws into the soft ground and raised his paw in the air, as if he were about to strike a snake in the head less than a tail length away.
Snakepaw stole a glance at his mentor as she nabbed another fish, and he too flicked his paw out, ripping a chunk of moss off the ground in his claws and flinging it into the air. Thinking quickly, he realized that he did not want that in his mouth, but it was too late to avoid getting splattered on with clumps of moss. Snakepaw flinched away in embarrassment before shaking the moss from his pelt, and looking over to see if his mentor had witnessed all that. He quickly turned to face Whitewind to hear the next part of today's training lecture. "It's not so hard, but it can take some time to get used to. You must hold your body back slightly so your reflection won't be in the water; the fish will see your shadow and avoid you. First try it on the bank a few times, you might not catch a fish your first few times, which is fine. We are mostly working on form; catching prey would just be an added bonus for the clan!" Snakepaw's whiskers twitched in excitement that he would get to make his first trained attempt at fishing. "After you get the form perfect, you can try it on the rock in the river. I'm sure you'll get the form well enough today, we have all day to spend here and we can take breaks so that you're not too tired by the end of the training."
Snakepaw nodded. "Okay!" he purred before eagerly tip-toeing to a grassy spot on the edge of the bank to practice his form where there weren't clumps of broken moss on the ground to remind him of the silly thing he had did several moments prior. As he neared the edge, he crouched down with his gaze locked on the water. So far, no shadow had appeared on the moving surface. His shortness made it almost easy to keep his reflection away. Snakepaw crept forward slowly until two tiny dark triangle shapes appeared, and he ducked his head to keep his ear shadows off the water. His paws planted on the damp earth while he raised one paw in the air, ready to strike. He realized that this must be a bit easier than standing on a rock and having to also think about holding his balance.
Small silvery bodies flitted to and fro beneath the water. Snakepaw wondered which one he should go for. How close should a fish swim to be within sure fire range? None of the silvery bodies appeared to have any plans of straying near the bank any time soon, so Snakepaw leaned forward and crouched even lower. Then he locked his concentration onto one of the fish, and his paw shot forward. Snakepaw's paw smacked the water with a loud splash, and his claws pressed forward through the water, but the fish had already slipped away. Snakepaw stepped back, a frown of disappointment on his face. Looking at Whitewind, he admitted in a small mew, "I didn't split the water right..." Snakepaw leaned forward again to see if the moving water still had fish, but they had all fled the scene. He stood up and glanced again at his mentor, wondering if he should try another spot to fish.

She watched the apprentice with calm blue eyes as he clearly concentrated on the new information. Whitewind could recall her first time learning how to fish and how odd her mentor looked perched neatly over the rivers bank with a straight tail lying behind him. Whitewind would never forget the feeling of catching her first fish, the silver beast seemed so large beneath the reflective pool of blue, she had drawn her paw up with translucent claws glinting in the sun before splitting the water neatly and grasping a seemingly large fish. She tossed it into the air to land on the river bank, annoyingly it hit the ground and the left over water splashed off of its scales onto her paws, she jumped back surprised and slipped on the damp ground. At the time, Whitewind was embarrassed, her mentor - Ferntail had laughed at her and Whitewind soon joined in when she realized the absurdity of the situation, with herself imitating the dying fish on the bank. The senior warrior looked upon that memory fondly and hoped Snakepaw would experience similar joy with his first catch.
"Do...do the fish only live in certain parts of the river?" his words took her away from her thoughts and with a smile she let out a faint chuckle. "Fish go where they wish, all of the river is their home." she mewed softly, sitting and coiling her tail around her paws. "The rapids will push through the rocks gathered in one space, the river will flow faster and the bed with dip slightly from the dents made by the water. Rocks with be pushed along the bed, bouncing along the rivers floor with incredible speed. Although it wouldn't hurt us, fish are smaller and frail." she gestured to a clump of rocks huddled together above a small plunge pool with water pushing out through the cracks with high pressure with a dip of her head. "It's dangerous for them, it would be like crossing a thunderpath littered with monsters, you wouldn't do it." As she demonstrated once more the technique from the rock jutting out in the center of the river, she caught the fish and glanced kindly at Snakepaw, who was imitating her form. 'Not bad at all.' she thought as she looked at his, with practice he would have the technique down quickly. Her paws touched the rivers bank and watched as he attempted to catch his first fish.
Whitewind watched at the paw jutted forward flat against the water, she knew he wouldn't catch a single fish with a flat paw like that but he'd learn from his mistakes. The water splashed against the bank and the loud smacking noise from the impact made Whitewind wince slightly. "I didn't split the water right..." the mentor smiled kindly at her apprentice before stepping forward. "Not even Swanstar caught a fish on her first attempt, don't over think your mistakes - learn from them." The siamese cat sat close to Snakepaw with her tail coiled around her paws with the green grass wilting over cream and brown tinted fur. Dipping her head at the water Whitewind continued, "You held your paw flat when you tried to split the water, that was your mistake. You must point it at an angle to split the water correctly - and even if you succeed, you may still miss the fish due to bad timing. It will take practice, watch once more.". The elegant warrior got to her paws quietly before inching closer to the river, the grass and earth were damp beneath her dainty paws and she drew her claws - gripping into the earth so she wouldn't fall, angling her body perfectly so her reflection didn't cast a shadow along the lake. She drew a paw skyward, and in a diagonal line she thrust her paw silently in the river, grasping one of the many silver bodies before tossing it onto the bank to watch it squirm and die from suffocation.
Her three catches lay near each other and Whitewind smiled. The river was giving the clan many fish today, for the cool breeze and soon to be iced over lake with the on coming Leafbare they were lucky to have so many fish still in the river. Even if Snakepaw didn't make a successful catch the elders would be pleased with the amount of fish Whitewind had caught alone. "Try again Snakepaw, and if miss again, keep trying. I can show you the technique as much as you want but it will take practice to get it right, your form is almost perfect - I'd say you're not too far from catching your first fish." she purred flicking her tail kindly against his flank as she stepped backwards to observe the toms skills with calm blue eyes. She wanted him to succeed, after the nightmare the tom had just experienced, surely a first catch would cheer him up and maybe grant him a dream that echoed of his earlier success.
