Rain drizzled down through the pines and lightly soaked the camp. A small figure appeared from the entrance of the nursery. Whirlkit flicked his ears as water droplets fell onto them from the low hanging branches above that covered the bramble thicket which made up the nursery's walls. He was too big for the nursery to feel comfortable lying around in there for a long time. It would be soon enough that he would finally be made an apprentice and get to explore Shadowclan's territory without getting carried back by one of the queens. But Whirlkit showed none of the energy and hyper activeness that most kits felt when their apprenticeship drew near. He may be only a kit, but for some reason, he already had the maturity of an adult, like as if nothing was new to him. He simply looked like the calmest kit ever, waiting patiently to take the next step towards becoming a warrior and serving his clan well.
With a calm, neutral expression on his face, Whirlkit flashed his pale gaze around before padding out from the nursery entrance. The downpour there was stronger because of the dripping branches above. He felt no emotional attachment to the nursery or even the queens there who cared for him in his earlier moons as a kit, because his real mother, the only family member he had bonded with, was not here. Whirlkit carefully avoided the puddles forming in the camp and moved to a spot where the trees were thick enough to provide sufficient shelter from the rain and not drip on him. He liked to be out of the nursery, but he had to stay in camp for now.

R A G G E D S T A R The rain brought a therapeutic sound as it hit the ground in small pellets of water. Sharp green eyes watched from the warmth of his shadowed den, his figure barely visible with the lack of light allowing his black fur to blend into the shadows. The scent of Icestar seemed to linger in the den even though it had been moons since the Starclan warrior had set foot in it, Raggedstar sat with a firm posture, her chest held confidently with a long matted tail coiled loosely around large paws. Raggedstar had already patrolled that day with his warriors, now he sat in silence with the thoughts of his conversation with Moonshadow lingering in his mind for a reason unknown to him - seeming to draw confidence from the steady words spoken by the attractive she-cat. His eyes remained placed on the camp clearing with a vacant expression as his mind wandered aimlessly through his thoughts before spotted a smaller figure slip silently and calmly from the nursery entrance.
He didn't have to be up close to know that the young cat was Whirlkit. The tom confused Raggedstar, unlike any other excited kit in the nursery who was approaching his time to become an apprentice he was appeared almost unhappy at most times, though Raggedstar knew of quiet kits yes, but a kit who refuses to bond with a queen is a rare sight, almost a sight you'd never see. He let out a small grunt on confusion before moving silently into the rain allowing it to hit his thick pelt in it's repetitive way as he made his way to the kit in a few swift strides. Whirlkit had chosen a sheltered place, thankfully for Raggedstar - he knew if the kit was sitting in the rain he would soon be in trouble from something all cats seemed to fear the wrath of - the medicine cat. He looked at the cat with calm green eyes that held no concern for the small kit. "Out on your own in this weather Whirlkit?" he mewed in his usual deep voice as he moved to sit near the tom under the shelter. "You're too big for the nursery now, I'd say. I'll have to talk to Brackenshade about sorting out your ceremony." he mewed simply, usually this would bring a kit to a ball of excited nerves - excited enough to imitate a riverclan cat by falling into a puddle. "You know, if you catch a cold you will delay becoming an apprentice, this weather will certainly help you with that if that is your intention." his voice became firm at that, even warriors were reluctant to sit happily in the rain though he couldn't blame the kit from wanting to get away from the obviously cramped nursery filled with queens but few kits. His brow furrowed at the thought, Shadowclan definitely needed more young cats though with two new apprentices recently joining in on duties and soon Whirlkit - the leader had high hopes for a future of peace.

[attr="class","blacks"] [attr="class","blacksw"] WHIRLKIT [attr="class","blackswa"] [attr="class","quote"]❝ | "There is a wild fire inside you," burning desire you can't extinguish. "Your crimson arrow rips through the twilight." This is the moment for war
Whirlkit sat in solemn silence as he stared down the endless sheet of pattering raindrops. His long, dark tail curled around his small white paws, then stilled. He sat like this for a time that seemed to be drawn out by the rapid fall of water pounding repetitively. Whirlkit's pale eyes were glazed over with daydreams; he was thinking absent-mindedly about something. "Out on your own in this weather Whirlkit?" The leader's deep voice snapped Whirlkit back to the present, and he jumped a little, his shoulders popping up and his eyes widening briefly. Whirlkit immediately recalled his manners and dipped his head respectfully to the leader. "You're too big for the nursery now, I'd say. I'll have to talk to Brackenshade about sorting out your ceremony. Raggedstar meowed.
Whirlkit's small brown ears faintly pricked at the announcement, but his expression still looked as if he didn't care if his apprenticeship came in a few sunrises or several more moons. His incredible patience was the sort that deadened his spirit to things that any other cat would deem the most exciting moments of his life. "I see. Thank you Raggedstar." Whirlkit meowed calmly in his young voice. Whirlkit was known for being respectful and mature around other warriors and figures of authority and importance, but it was as if he could no longer have fun.
When he was barely a few moons old, he would chase his long tail so furiously and enthusiastically that, as he spun and kicked up a whirlwind of moss in his nest, he was named Whirlkit by his birth mother, who also thought predictively he might be named "Whirlwind" as a warrior. But when she left the clan, by the time Whirlkit had gotten over her departure, he had lost the heart of a kit. Whirlkit had let his gaze drift back to the rain, then he returned his attention to Raggedstar as the leader then meowed firmly, "You know, if you catch a cold you will delay becoming an apprentice, this weather will certainly help you with that if that is your intention."
Whirlkit frowned slightly, not having hoped to make the leader concerned for his health. He also was feeling the idea of what it would be like if he were to catch a cold now and the shame of looking Raggedstar in the eye for having taken the risk and payed for it just as he had said. Whirlkit did not want that. The young tom's gaze flickered around uncomfortably as he searched for words to respectfully argue his case without sounding like he was making up excuses. "I...I thought it would be okay as long as I don't let my fur get completely soaked." He meowed, poking his muzzle in the direction of the thick branches above them that warded away most of the water and let it drip off in sheets near the ends.

R A G G E D S T A R Raggedstar watched the kit through narrowed eyes, his comment on an apprentice ceremony would have brought excitement to any other kit though Whirlkit kept a calm composure only thanking him as though he had only offered the tom prey. He tilted his head slightly, the kits personality had changed drastically ever since his mother left - of course he couldn't blame the kit for that. He was far too young to be without a mother and of course it would have an affect on him as a whole, it was sad to watch a kit who couldn't seem to build up the energy to be as excited and hyper active as other kits. He curled his matted tail around his paws tucked under himself in a regal sitting position as he glanced back out into the silent camp with vague sadness clouding his eyes for this kit sitting beside him, Raggedstar felt the unusual need that he had to help this kit - though he had no idea of what he could do for him. The rest of the clan was happy, the warriors continued to move with optimistic thoughts in their heads from the last successful battle against Thunderclan, even Raggedstar himself was happier - he had grown fond of a warrior she-cat, something he had never expected to happen, he was ultimately happy and stronger mentally now than he had been since he returned from the moonpool. "I...I thought it would be okay as long as I don't let my fur get completely soaked." His eyes flickered down to the brown and white kit, he was smaller than Raggedstar at this moment in time, though he knew the now small tom would grow to be an impressive warrior, his calm composure would aid him in stressful battle situations though for now it made him seem almost depressed. "I won't say a word to Lunastorm about this." he mewed with a soft chuckle. "Even though you have found shelter, it is still cold." he flicked the tom with the tip on his long tail before coiling it back around himself in a protective fashion as though he were shielding himself from the cool breeze that worked well with the heavy rain. "You know, when I was a kit, I fell into a puddle." he chuckled softly in an attempt to cheer up the kit, "It was the coldest thing I have ever experienced, our then medicine cat was furious with me, you should've seen him trying to scold me." he purred softly, a kind gaze locked onto the kit. "Sometimes doing what we shouldn't do bring the best memories that can make even the grumpiest elder grin from the thought of them." He watched Whirlkit with a calm expression, silently planning out who could mentor the cat and bring out the kit that used to twirl around kicking up dust with joy, it would have to be a young cat who still held onto their playful nature. Not the deputy, maybe Rockettail? though he acted too much like an irritating fool, so much so he might cause Whirlkit to become angry rather than cheerful. He rolled his eyes at the thought of the eccentric warrior as he glanced back over to the warrior den when the thought of the newly made warrior Addernose being a mentor came to him, yes he was young but he was loyal, brave and young enough to remember how it feels to be a kit, maybe. The leader had forgotten the kit was sitting next to him as he glanced back down after being lost in thought, "What brings you out into the rain anyway?" he questioned curiously. words || 619 tagged || Priestess Shizukaooc || do you want to have an apprentice ceremony thread for Whirlkit sometime soon?

[attr="class","blacks"] [attr="class","blacksw"] WHIRLKIT [attr="class","blackswa"] [attr="class","quote"]❝ [attr="class","notquote"] Raggedstar0517 WORDS Yeah that'd be awesome! :3 | "There is a wild fire inside you," burning desire you can't extinguish. "Your crimson arrow rips through the twilight." This is the moment for war
As Whirlkit gazed upward, he saw out of the corner of his eye Raggedstar looking at him. Whirlkit blinked his pale gray eyes self consciously, feeling the leader's green gaze on him. "I won't say a word to Lunastorm about this. Even though you have found shelter, it is still cold." The black tom promised with a chuckle, and Whirlkit stiffened uncomfortably as Raggedstar flicked him with the tip of his long tail. Whirlkit bowed his head, looking slightly apologetic. Had he made a foolish decision? But being alone or around adult cats was still seemingly a better time than the nursery alive with the mewling of kits and the painful warmth of queens who none of which were his own mother.
Whirlkit imitated Raggedstar and used his long tail to wrap up himself as he crouched down on all fours, careful not to let his belly fur get soaked by the cold, wet ground. Before his mind could fall into missing his mother again, Raggedstar interrupted his wandering thoughts with a story about the leader's own past. Whirlkit raised his chin and gazed curiously at Raggedstar, his ears perked. He never minded listening to tales about the past. "Sometimes, doing what we shouldn't do brings the best memories that can make even the grumpiest elder grin from the thought of them." Raggedstar concluded, and Whirlkit nodded, beginning to understand Raggedstar's point.
But he still had to wonder how precise the line was drawn between making mistakes to learn better and grow, and making critical or fatal mistakes that one could never live down or fix. Was there anything he could have done or said to keep his mother from being exiled, even as a young kit, and if so, was that a mistake he could never take back and would regret for the rest of his life? Whirlkit knew better however than to dwell on past regrets, and instead strive to live in the present instead as destiny foretold. And maybe he could personally do something about the way things were. When Raggedstar spoke again, Whirlkit realized now that Raggedstar had gone silent for a bit as they both had become lost in their thoughts. "What brings you out into the rain anyway?"
Whirlkit gave a small casual shrug and replied simply, "It's too stuffy in the nursery." which was a brief overview of his reasons for not feeling comfortable in there. Raggedstar was right about him being a little too big for the nursery. He slept in his own tight spot near the corner, keeping to himself like a dark shape that very much did not want to be disturbed by any hyperactive kits. He didn't play with them nor feel any fondness for them though they were socially in the same rank as he. Whirlkit flicked a raindrop off his ear and gazed idly at the hazelbranch under which his ceremony would be held like all the other ceremonies.
Maybe he was looking forward to the freedom of apprenticeship compared to the cramped life as a kit. |
