Splashpool was bored. She sat alone at the camp entrance, debating with herself regarding the activities that she should do for the rest of the morning and the afternoon. She could head towards the heart of Riverclan territory and start hunting for some fish to put in the fresh kill pile for the Clan's breakfast. She could also patrol around the rim of Riverclan's territory and renew scent marks. And fight off intruders. (Possibly around the Windclan border, since the edge of their territory with Shadowclan stinks of the Thunderpath and the cats that reside the opposing side.)
She had an early start that morning (crack of dawn, really.) and had already circled the camp twice--Or was it thrice?--in an attempt to find something to do. Half of her clan mates were still asleep, and the queens would obviously kill her if she barges inside the nursery to wake the kits up, although she knew they would love to play a game with her.
It was a nice warm morning and the sun had already risen towards the sky, the weather probably not going to develop into something exceedingly hot. Splashpool's blue green gaze swept across the camp again. She sighed, padding on the ground impatiently. It would be nice to have a buddy to explore the forests in. Her whiskers twitched slightly. She could have joined the dawn patrol, but during that certain time frame, she had managed to occupy herself in getting some new moss for her bedding and she forgot to volunteer herself. It was a waste though. The moss bedding barely took her ten minutes.
She sat around some more, giving her paws a quick lick. Maybe she should wait for the temperature to rise slightly, then the inspiration flashes would hit her and she would be able to decided between solo hunting and just walking around the forest. Of course. So right now she should indulge herself with watching camp activity from her current spot. Everyone looked like they were already awake and the camp was starting to bustle with activity. Maybe she could join the hunting patrol when they're ready to leave. Maybe. Just maybe.
But waiting around is boring.
Really boring.
Really, really boring.

The small calico she-cat was becoming increasingly impatient with Russetfur. She was no longer a kit, she'd been her apprentice for what felt like forever and it's not like she wanted to stop being the tanned cats student any longer, she just wanted her name. She was sick of being treated differently for her name, although she was a well respected member of Riverclan she found nobody came to her for help but all searched for Russetfur for all their medical needs. Foxpaw wasn't proud of the swelling jealousy in her chest toward her mentor but she couldn't deny its presence. The logical part of her mind said to talk to Russetfur about her feelings, after all, she was her closest friend in the clan, but something was stopping her. She shook her head with a sigh and pushed herself out of her neatly woven nest, slipping through her dens entrance with a gruff sigh.
The clan was awake as soon as she stepped into the clearing, her eyes adjusting slowly to the light as she dipped her head to her passing clan mates. She wore a guarded expression on her face, the energy of her jealousy burning bright and powerful in her chest making her want to run, swim or hunt. She needed to spend the energy before it burst in a loud hiss at her friends. Foxpaw couldn't allow herself to become a green beast so she glanced around the camp. Surely someone was interested in hunting, but it seemed as though everyone was doing something. Foxpaw rolled her eyes with a sigh, sitting down at the medicine cat den entrance, drawing a paw over her small ears. She could hunt alone, but that would lead Russetfur to be concerned for her well being, after all, she wasn't trained in any more that a few defensive techniques, she was no warrior. Although Foxpaw wasn't a warrior, she had energy to burn with no sick cats to ten to, and she had a good eye for hunting - why waste those talents when the herb stocks were full and in no need of replenishing? It's not like she'd be doing anything during this time.
As she placed her paw back on the ground, she glanced around once more, her eyes landing on Splashpool. And with a satisfied purr she bounded over with obvious eagerness. "You look bored." she stated simply, a cheerful expression on her face. And without waiting for her reply she continued, "I'm bored too, if I'm honest. And the weathers too nice for me to ignore, want to go hunting?" she purred. "Russetfur wouldn't mind, I assure you. She'd just want me to have a warrior companion in case we get attack, considering last time she took me training and I was disastrous." her voice was wistful and amused as she remembered her uncomfortable fall into the sandy earth, her paw twisting beneath her weight and then try to play it off to a medicine cat of all cats. She may have been a herb expert but her defensive skills could use some real work. "So, hunting?" she tilted her head after her banishing her thoughts of the past from her mind, sitting down elegantly in front of the young warrior with her long tail drawn across her paws in a relaxed manner.

Splashpool couldn't stand waiting any longer. She simply had to go and do something, before she dies of boredom. The sheer amount of energy that has built up inside her body will eventually explode into pieces. It would be amusing, when her clan mates find her dead body without being able to locate the cause of her death. Splashpool scuffed the ground with her front paws a little more, her long tail sweeping around the dust, tangling itself with a few pieces of twig and rock. She sighed again, before finally pushing herself to her paws. She will go hunting. She could do with a nice swim in the river and she could find herself a lovely catch of a big white minnow--a catch that would impress every other cat.
Splashpool's ears pricked at the sound of the approaching calico apprentice, turning around to face the slightly younger cat. "Hello hello hello!" Splashpool chirped happily, her eyes gleaming, at the sight of Foxpaw. "It's a nice wonderful nice day, you think so? And yes, a hunting trip would be nice. Really, really nice. And we can catch double the amount of fish with just the two of us... I mean, if the both of us catch like seven or so fishes each, it can double the pile in the fresh kill pile." And there she went, chattering on and on. "Where do you wanna go? The main river? Or maybe we can go and not catch fish at all. We can try and catch squirrels and birds and maybe we'll understand why Thunderclan likes eating those so, so much."
Splashpool started to walk around in circles, like she always does when she's excited. The energy that she has bundled up inside her was steaming out in a long quick flow.

Foxpaw let out a loud purr of amusement, she could almost feel the energy radiating off the young warrior who was seemingly as restless as she was. "It's a nice wonderful nice day, you think so? And yes, a hunting trip would be nice. Really, really nice. And we can catch double the amount of fish with just the two of us... I mean, if the both of us catch like seven or so fishes each, it can double the pile in the fresh kill pile." Foxpaws eyes lit up in amusement as the older she-cat rambled on, and on. When she was finally finished speaking Foxpaw finally gave her input, "I think you're over estimating the hunting skills of me as a medicine cat." she laughed lightly, a musical sound filled with happiness. Foxpaw pondered the location for a moment before her ears perked, "Lets give Thunderclan style hunting a try, I'm always up for a challenge!" she purred bouncing to her paws eagerly.
Bounding away from the warrior with a flick of her tail, "C'mon! I'll race you there." she yelled over her shoulder as she pushed through the protective reeds sheltering the camp, bounding easily through the open area. There weren't many places where they could hunt like Thunderclan cats, after all, they had chosen the open land many moons ago that was protected by rivers. Perhaps their best option would be near the Shadowclan border, few trees littered the path to the border and it was probably their best option even if they'd have to stay as far away from the border as possible, Foxpaw wasn't in the mood for one of Raggedstars warriors snapping at them about tresspassing. Those hairballs had too many burrs stuck in their fur for Foxpaws liking. Without slowing down for Splashpool, Foxpaw bounded on wards until she was met with few trees littering the path leading them to the border.
Waiting for Splashpool before she turned her head with a purr, "How about here? It was the only place I could think of with enough trees for this." she chuckled sheepishly, glancing at her paws and pushing at the earth by flexing her claws. "Lets just stay away from the border though, you know how those cats are after their conflicts with Thunderclan," she gestured toward the border with a dip of her head as she spoke. "Honestly, they're as bad as each other." she laughed with a flick of her tail as she perked her ears and narrowed her eyes, her jaw dropping slightly as she scented the air. Squirrel? Hopefully a squirrel. "I got something." she murmured softly before treading away lightly, her tail held high to prevent the long hairs brushing against the ground. Her eyes narrowed onto a tree trunk, a small brown shape moved quickly, sliding up the bark like a snake on a stone, perching itself on a branch. Foxpaw felt her heart beat quickly in her chest, she'd never tried to catch a target on a tree before.
Her rear shook slightly before she pounced, her claws pressing into the bark as she pulled herself quickly and with much effort upward. Pouncing onto the thick branch that shook beneath her weight before thrusting a powerful paw forward to crush the squirrels neck. Sadly, her paw hit the branch, the vibrations sending the squirrel away, and causing her to loose her balance. She rolled around as best as she could mid air as she fell, landing on soft grass with a huff. "Uh.. guess it's not as easy as it looks." she laughed. She could already feel the ache in her muscles and the light bruising on her side from her fall, rolling her eyes at her typical clumsiness she pounced to her paws. "I think I'll stick to the ground before I accidentally destroy the world with my clumsiness." she purred, twisting her head and pulling twigs from her long fur before perking her ears once more, listening for more tiny creatures.

Splashpool perked up with interest at the apprentice's idea. Thunderclan hunting style! In every gathering that she has been to as an apprentice, the Thunderclan apprentices that she tried to talk to would boast about their hunting skills, almost every single time. It's always a 'I caught a squirrel on my first try' or a 'I bet you fish is nothing compared to mouse and rabbit', and all Splashpool was able to do was sit and try to listen as politely as she can. Riverclan lives on a diet mainly of fish, and some occasional river birds and voles in Leaf-bare--and it's not really like Splashpool ate any of those birds or vole. In Leaf bare, the best prey goes to the queen and elders. She jumped to her feet, her tail lashing in excitement. "Sounds great!" The she-cat exclaimed. "And we're not on patrol, so it's not a strict no eating rule."
Foxpaw bounded away, leaving Splashpool in the clearing to guess where they would be going. The main river perhaps? Or maybe around one of the borders. The she-cat sprang forward, feeling herself bubble with joy. She loved running, feeling the wind swept through her fur.. Splashpool was adapt with speed, but she had no idea where on earth they would be going so she decidedly keep pace with Foxpaw. As the two cats sped along the forest, it finally dawned on Splashpool that they might be heading towards the Shadowclan border. She wrinkled her nose as she recalled the scent of Shadowclan cats., giving herself a small burst of speed.
She tilted her head as they reached the tree. "You're right." Splashpool agreed, making sure she sounded as solemn as possible. "This tree is great, and as perfectly far from the border as possible." She she-cat purred with amusement as she watched Foxpaw's attempt to get a grab at the squirrel before landing on a heap to the ground. "You okay?" Splashpool asked, her whiskers twitching, while looking up the tree. The squirrel has returned again, the tiny creature twittering at them mockingly a few feet above their heads.
"Lemme try." The she-cat heaved herself towards the tree, sinking her claws in with all her might, trying to find herself a good footing. She was lighter and slightly smaller then her Riverclan mates, but the tree obviously did not agree with her either. She had managed to pull herself on a branch when it snapped, sending her down towards the bottom of the tree.
"Oops!" Splashpool laughed, trying to brush the twigs and small pieces of pebbles that clung to her pelt. The squirrel twittered again, and settled down. It obviously knows that they won't be able to reach it. "Let's try land prey." She told Foxpaw, giving the squirrel a stink eye. A small acorn landed beside her from above, the squirrel twittering loudly. "Maybe a mouse?"

Foxpaw nodded in response to Splashpools question before padding over to her with bright eyes. "Lemme try." Foxpaw dipped her head and stepped aside as the warrior moved toward the trees, climbing it easily, landing on a branch that creaked under her weight. Foxpaw watched with wide eyes as the branch snapped, leaving Splashpool to fall, landing on the hard earth. Foxpaw ran over with concern in her eyes ready to check for broken bones or bruising. "Oops!" Foxpaw let out a loud sigh of relief, "You had me worried for a minute there!" she laughed lightly. The rustling of leaves above the causing Foxpaw to look up at the squirrel staring down at them, "Let's try land prey. Maybe a mouse?" the words drew Foxpaws eyes from her glaring competition with the small rodent. "Yeah, sure. It's mocking us anyway, we'll get it when it least expects it." she mewed mischievously, her haunches twitching as she opened her maw slightly to scent the air.
Mouse. Maybe this piece of prey won't taunt them. Foxpaw moved away from Splashpool with a twitch of her ears, sidling across the ground with gentle steps, careful to avoid any fallen twigs. The grey shape was small and unimpressive but still prey. Her rear shook as her eyes narrowed, before she pounced, claws outstretched as she trapped the mouse between long pointed claws before sinking her teeth neatly into its neck, instantly snapping its neck. With a purr, she pulled up her prey and bounded back happily to her warrior escort. "I go' a fing!" she mewed through the mouse before digging a hole and dropping the small creature in it. "He's small but, I'm sure it'll make a good snack for an elder." she mewed as she pushed the dirt easily over the hole she created, burying her prey. Her eyes glanced back up the tall tree that she assumed was a pine tree considering how close they were to shadow clan.
The squirrel, perched on a lower branch than before not paying any attention to them, concentration on the acorn clutched in its pointed claws. "Oh!" she whispered, "Starclan be with me, I'm gonna catch that rodent." she mewed determinedly. She pounced upward, gripping the tree with her claws, pulling herself upward with quick little jumps with the trees trunk, landing on the branch. It creaked slightly under her weight, she thrust her paw forward almost hitting the squirrel on its back, the force of her paw on the branch causing it to vibrate and snap beneath their weight. Foxpaw focused on her lessons from her mentor about climbing trees in floods and how to get out easily, she landed silently, her legs bending under her weight allowing for a safer landing even though the impact on her paws still stung. The squirrel lay in front of her stunned on the grass and with a purr of satisfaction Foxpaw batted it with her paw, "Gotcha!" she mewed cheerfully before snapping the creatures neck.
"Our falls have been avenged." she mewed with giggle as she buried the squirrel by her mouse.

Splashpool gave the squirrel one last glare before bouncing off after the apprentice. Almost immediately, Foxpaw had scented a mouse and caught it. She grinned as she watched the apprentice bound back towards her, a small mouse swinging in her jaws. “Good catch!” Splashpool complimented cheerfully, as Foxpaw started to dig the hole to bury the prey. “I’ll get something too." Splashpool looked around, her mouth open to detect any scents of prey. There was no way in Starclan that she’ll lose to an apprentice! As the calico apprentice wandered away to get more prey, Splashpool took a long sniff in the air. The smells were pretty confusing to her at first, but gradually, she got used to it. Riverclans does not really specialize in sniffing out prey because after all, they ate fish. Fish does not really have a distinct smell unless it was rotting by the bank or half ripped open by another predator.
There! Splashpool saw a small white tail bob through the underbrush. A rabbit. Thunderclan loves rabbits. Windclan too. She could briefly remember them talking about their techniques to catch a rabbit but she had no idea what their technique is. In a brief flashback, she could remember discussing with her mentor about rabbit catching. Her eyes lit up as she dropped herself to her ground ready to spring forward.
She had no idea what a hunting crouch is, never learning it before. Stealth was immediately forgotten as she sprang forward, her claws outstretched towards the rabbit. The rabbit ducked, starting to sprint away. Splashpool grinned to herself as she started to engage with the chase. She was fast. Faster than most cats in her clan, being able to duck and maneuver really quickly. The rabbit was within her sights. She bunched up her muscles, and jumped, landing on top of the rabbit, slicing through fur. What followed was kind of like a downhill roll with Splashpool frantically trying to stay on her paws and at the same time keeping her clutch on that rabbit. She ignored the small brief spasms of pain when some fur were ripped off in nearby vegetation but it was worth it. The rabbit was dead by the time she managed to skid to a halt, panting.
Her eyes bright, she trotted towards Foxpaw, who had also caught a squirrel. “Awesome!” Splashpool mumbled, before dropping the rabbit. “Nice catch. And yes, our poor little falls have been avenged. Hey, we can give the rabbit to the clan to eat. It’s not an official patrol so we actually get the chance to try that squirrel. Wanna go eat it?” Her belly rumbled. She didn’t realize she was that hungry.

Foxpaw grinned at the sight of the rabbit. "You sure you're not a Windclan cat?" she grinned, "Nice catch!" she purred, trotting toward the older she-cat. “Nice catch. And yes, our poor little falls have been avenged. Hey, we can give the rabbit to the clan to eat. It’s not an official patrol so we actually get the chance to try that squirrel. Wanna go eat it?” the medicine cat apprentices purr grew louder at the praise of a warrior. Russetfur never neglected her with praise, but it felt special coming from an actual warrior. "Thanks!" she purred, digging up the squirrel again. She pulled it out of the ground with a grunt, trotting back over to Splashpool and dropping at her paws with a grin. "You first, save me some, I'm gonna go look for more prey." she grinned before bounding away again.
Her paws felt as though they weren't even touching the ground as she ran, her hind legs bending before she sprung upwards, her claws grasping onto a thick branch, pulling herself upward with a loud huff. She pressed her chest against the branch her jaw open hoping to catch a scent. Her tail hung twitching slightly, her ears tilted forward. She caught a strange scent in the wind, her body jerked upwards, the fur on her neck standing on end. The scent was coming from the Shadowclan border, it was a shadowclan cats scent mixed with a rogues, kits and blood? Foxpaw instantly jumped downward from the branch, worry bubbling in her chest as she ran toward the border only to be met with stale scents and a quiet border. The young she-cat, dared not to cross the markers, but it was indeed curious to smell a rogue and her kits along with blood? If there were injured cats, Foxpaw wanted to help. It was her duty after all.
Turning heel, she ran back to Splashpool her breath heavy as she spoke. "Strange scent, Shadowclan, rogue, kits, blood." she panted harshly after her run, collapsing into a sitting position with heavy breaths. "I went to the border, I was careful, don't worry. But there was no one there and the scents were stale." she mewed after catching her breath. "I don't think it's safe to come back, but I think someone has died or been injured in Shadowclan, the scent of blood was strong enough from across the border. I can't say I smelled a Shadowclan cat though, just the usual border markers but the rogues and the kits were pretty strong. Maybe they were the ones hurt?" she mewed curiously, mulling over the scents in her mind through her anxieties. "It's none of our business and we shouldn't rush to get back because of it, but when we do we need to let Swanstar and Russetfur know. We probably shouldn't tell anyone else until the next gathering." she mewed softly at Splashpool.
"Anyway. Enough of Shadowclan and rogues, gimme some of that squirrel. How's it taste?" she purred stepping forward, pushing the scent of blood and Shadowclan far from his mind.

Splashpool nodded enthusiastically as she watched Foxpaw walk off in more search of prey, and gave the squirrel a quick bite. “Yuck!” Almost immediately, she spat it back out. Disgusting! She thought, staring at the piece of prey as if it would suddenly rear up and bite her. It was nothing like fish. The flesh was way tougher, and the taste was much sour than the usual fish she ate. She stuck her tongue out, desperately trying to get rid of the taste. No such luck. She quickly buried the piece of flesh she spat out, sitting down with a soft plod on the forest floor. She didn’t expect the squirrel to be that bad. Maybe she should warn Foxpaw when she comes back.
The calico apprentice did return, looking way out of breath, and shaken. “Strange scent, Shadowclan, rogue, kits, blood.” Splashpool stared at Foxpaw, surprised as the apprentice launched forward to her sightings and the scent before moving in to try the squirrel. “Uh.” Splashpool started, her head in a desperate turmoil. The combination of blood, kits and rogue made her shudder as she placed two and two together.
Splashpool never did like the thought of expecting queens. Their bellies bloated out unnaturally to her, and there was lots of blood and pain by the end of it. “Foxpaw, do you think there could be like… a queen kitting over there?” She asked. She really wanted to go and look and see what the problem was and maybe help, but a small voice in her head whispered desperately that it was a horrible, horrible idea. “I guess we could go help, but I don’t want to get into trouble for border crossing again. And you’re right, it’s none of our business.”
“And don’t eat that, it’s bad.” Splashpool added, slightly later, hoping that Foxpaw haven’t taken a bite out of the prey yet. “Squirrels are bad. Really bad.”

“Foxpaw, do you think there could be like… a queen kitting over there?” the younger cats brow furrowed at the thought. Trying to remember the scents to see if she got anything of a kitting queen. She couldn't recall the distinct smell of a kitting queen but the blood and kits would make sense if a cat was kitting. "I have no idea, I'd have to be closer. There smell of blood was too strong for a healthy kitting, there was way too much blood. Even if we did cross, whoever owns that blood would be dead by now." she mewed softly sitting down. The calico she-cat curled her tail around her paws.
"We shouldn't cross. We'll just report it when we return and see if Raggedstar mentions it at the next gathering. Or if I see Lunastorm at the half moon, I'll try ask." she mewed softly. She spoke rather frantically like she was trying to reassure herself there was nothing to be done. Foxpaw knew going over would be foolish, but she became a medicine cat to help, but all logic dictated that whoever was bleeding, at lost too much blood. But what if she could make their journey to Starclan easier?
“And don’t eat that, it’s bad. Squirrels are bad. Really bad.” the warriors voice drew Foxpaw from her thoughts. "Aw, what?" she mewed with a pout. "I'm gonna try it anyway." she mewed determinedly. She pulled gingerly at the squirrel lifting her head with narrowed eyes as the still warm flesh hit her tongue. She chewed quietly for a moment before standing up and walking to a bush. Spitting out the bit of squirrel in her mouth with a hiss, "You weren't wrong!" she mewed dramatically. Running back over to her companion she rolled onto her back with a dramatic sigh, "I think it's going to kill me." she whispered through a hoarse voice, her eyes wide with mock fear. "For real though, how in Starclan do Thunderclan survive?" she laughed, sitting back up.
